Make Mindfulness a Habit

We all know by now the many benefits of mindfulness and how it can lower stress, increase happiness and make you an over-all better version of yourself. So why is it that so many people still don’t practice mindfulness on a daily basis? Simple, the rational brain is separate from the habitual brain. Rationally, we get it and know that practicing mindfulness on a regular basis will help in all aspects of our life. However, we are creatures of habit and if we don’t have the proper support systems in place to establish a new habit, odds are we won’t change… even if we know how good it is for us.

So how can you help yourself and convert your rational knowledge into life changing habits?

1) It’s not about being perfect, it’s about being present. – Let go of the idea of setting aside 20-40 min a day to meditate in silent isolation. While this is a great goal to have, it’s also quite lofty especially at the start of your mindfulness journey. It can seem a bit daunting and frankly a bit unrealistic in our over scheduled lives. Instead, aim to try one or two mindful moments in your day. Whether it’s a few moments of mindful breathing, a couple bites of mindful eating at lunch or a mindful walk from the bus to your office. Start with these small mindful moments and work your way up to the full marathon of a 40 minute meditation. And remember, consistency is key!

2) Set up a Support System – Surround yourself with people who understand and respect that you are working to make mindfulness a part of your daily life. Register to an online mindfulness community or book International Tower’s weekly mindfulness group on Mondays 12pm-12:30.

3) Stay inspired! New information keeps things interesting. Listen to a new podcast, read some good books, watch a documentary, talk with friends. Thanks to it’s growing popularity there’s more and more research coming out everyday on mindfulness and it’s positive impact in peoples lives.
