To celebrate International Day of the Girl on Saturday 11 October we hosted a joyful choir performance in our lobbies. The House That Dan Built is a 100% not-for-profit charity that helps young women find their creative voices through song and story. Since its inception in 2015 they have worked with more than 500 girls across Australia, many from disadvantaged and marginalised communities.
International Day of the Girl recognises the rights, potential and leadership of girls around the world. This day is a time to celebrate progress, spotlight ongoing barriers and create spaces where girls can be heard. Our celebration at the Towers brought that global purpose to life with music, conversation and community. The event combined live performance with short talks about the importance of arts education, confidence building and access to creative opportunities for girls from all backgrounds.
Girls are future female leaders. By investing in them we invest in the future empowerment and diversity of female voices across Australia. As a corporation that champions female voices, supporting the next generation of women has never been more important. At the event tenants, staff and visitors paused to reflect on practical ways we can support girls through mentorship, sponsorship and workplace initiatives that open doors and build skills.
With our Artistic Director Danielle O’Keefe leading the program, the Toy Choir, 15 girls aged 10 to 18 dressed in white and red, performed original songs while playing red ukuleles. These pieces were written and arranged to lift the spirit and fill the heart with hope for the next generation of female voices. Between songs there were short reflections from the choir leaders and a chance for the audience to learn about the charity’s work and how to get involved.
