Light will win: Joining Australia's National Day of Mourning

Join in a minute of silence, light a candle at your window, and consider doing a good deed.

This Thursday, 22 January, Australia will observe a National Day of Mourning for the victims of the Bondi Beach attack. The theme, Light will win - a gathering of unity and remembrance, reminds us that even in moments of deep sorrow, hope and connection can still emerge.

At 7:01PM AEDT, we are invited to pause for a minute of silence - whether you're at home, at work, or gathered with others - to honour those we've lost and to hold space for everyone affected.

You may also wish to light a candle on your windowsill Thursday evening as a quiet symbol of remembrance.

The Prime Minister has encouraged us to do a good deed - "mitzvah for Bondi" - as a way to honour the fifteen lives lost. As he shared, "A mitzvah is an act of kindness or compassion. It can be helping out a neighbour, checking on them. It can be volunteering. It can be donating money. It can be essentially any act of kindness as a part of paying tribute."

This National Day of Mourning is a moment for all of us to reflect, stand with our communities, and choose kindness, compassion and unity.
