Putting Children First: Rethinking Child Protection in Australia with Jason Blyth

Has the conversation about climate changed—or has it simply evolved?

What if we measured the success of Australia's child protection system by one simple question: Would this be good enough for our own child?

In this powerful and purpose-driven conversation, youth advocate and lived-experience leader  explores why Australia needs to rethink the way we protect, support and advocate for vulnerable children.

Having experienced severe childhood abuse and spent time within systems designed to protect children, Jason brings a perspective shaped not only by advocacy, but by lived experience. His message is clear: protecting children cannot simply be about meeting policies, processes and compliance measures. It must be about the experience of the child at the centre of every decision.

Through his Child First Model, Jason is working to build a movement that challenges governments, organisations, communities and individuals to raise the standard of what we consider acceptable for vulnerable children. He asks us to move beyond awareness and good intentions towards greater accountability, earlier action and a shared responsibility to create systems that protect, nurture and fight for every child.

Together, we explore what needs to change, why children's voices and experiences must remain at the centre of reform, and the role each of us can play in creating a safer future for the next generation.

This conversation will resonate with leaders, educators, parents, policymakers, child advocates, community organisations and anyone who believes every child deserves the opportunity to grow up safe, supported and valued.

Key takeaways include:

  • Why we need to rethink how success is measured within child protection.

  • How Jason's Child First Model puts the lived experience and needs of children ahead of process and compliance.

  • Why protecting vulnerable children requires shared responsibility across systems, communities and individuals.

  • How we can move from awareness and conversation towards accountability, advocacy and meaningful action.
